How dwarf names work

Dwarf names are short, heavy and solid, usually one or two syllables built from hard consonants like b, d, g, k, r and th. They sound like something carved into stone. First names come from a short, blunt start and a strong ending (Bromdin, Thorgrim, Dagnar), and clan names join a metal or stone with a craft or body part: Ironbeard, Stonehelm, Coalfist.

Tips

  • Dwarf female names here end in -hild, -dis and -run, a nod to the Old Norse roots most fantasy dwarves draw on.
  • Pair a gentle first name with a fierce clan name (or the other way round) to make a character stand out.
  • A clan name can hint at backstory: a Coalvein is a miner, an Alebrew runs the tavern.

Frequently asked questions

Why do so many dwarf names sound Norse?

Modern fantasy dwarves grew out of Norse myth, where dwarves (dvergar) had names like Durin and Dvalin. Our sound rules use the same hard, short syllables without copying those names.

What is a good dwarf clan name?

Join a material (Iron, Stone, Bronze, Granite) with a craft or feature (forge, beard, hammer, shield). The generator does this for every name.

Can I use these names?

Yes. Names are free to use for pets, stories, games, products and anything else. Real names come from public government records; fantasy names are generated, so you do not need permission to use them.
