How to Choose a Character Name That Fits When They Were Born
Readers notice when a name does not fit a character’s age. A grandmother called Madison or a teenager called Linda pulls them out of the story. The fix is simple: choose a name from the decade your character was born, not the decade the story is set in.

- Michael was the top boys’ name in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.
- Today’s leaders, Olivia and Liam, would sound wrong for anyone over about 25.

Four steps to an era-appropriate name
- Work out the birth year. A character who is 45 in a story set in 2025 was born around 1980.
- Pick from that decade’s list. Our character name generator lets you set “born in” to any decade from the 1880s.
- Decide how common it should be. A very popular name makes a character feel ordinary; a rare one makes them stand out. Each name shows its rank and how many babies got it.
- Check it against the other characters. Avoid names that start with the same letter or sound alike.
Names that cross generations
Some names have stayed popular for well over a century: James, William and Elizabeth have been in the top 25 in every decade since the 1880s, so they suit a character of almost any age. Others, like Jennifer (1970s) or Jessica (1980s), are strongly tied to one era, which can be useful when you want a name that quietly tells the reader how old someone is.
Browse the decades
Every decade has its own page with the top 25 boys’ and girls’ names, the fastest-rising names and that decade’s unisex names: start with names from the 1950s or the 1980s.
