NameGeneratorHQ is a free collection of name generators built on real records. It is made by a small independent team that builds simple, fast tools for everyday tasks.
Why we built it
Most name generators either pick from a short fixed list or invent names with no context. We wanted something better: names that come with facts, so you can see whether a name is a classic everyone uses or something almost nobody has.
Where our names come from
- Dog and cat names from 362,380 licensed dogs in New York City and Seattle and 16,426 licensed cats in Seattle, from the cities’ public open-data records.
- People names from official birth records in six English-speaking countries: the US Social Security Administration (1880–2024), Ontario’s Registrar General for Canada, ONS, National Records of Scotland and NISRA for the UK, the Central Statistics Office for Ireland, the NSW and WA registries for Australia, and New Zealand’s Department of Internal Affairs. Surnames come from the 2020 US Census and the Office for National Statistics’ counts for Great Britain.
- Fantasy names from our own sound rules for 24 races and creatures, plus towns, kingdoms, taverns, guilds and ships.
